I can't remember a time when I didn't love painting. I started painting with oils when I was about 12 years old. When I was 24, I read about a New York artist named Ilona Royce Smithkin who was coming to teach art classes at the Thor Art Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky.
Even though I felt intimidated, I scraped up the money and went to the week long class. There was a live nude model and ten experienced art students in the class. Ilona gave me confidence, skills, and a life long friendship. For years she would come twice a year to Louisville and teach Impressionist painting. Many of those times she would stay with us in our home.
Ilona believes to this day, at age 99, that anyone can learn to paint. The secret is that the student must learn to believe in themselves. I too believe that anyone can learn to paint. You just have to believe!
In this class we will be painting a landscape in plein air. (Outside in nature.) You don't need any prior painting experience to participate. If you are already a painter with your own way of painting, you are welcome to come and do your own thing.
I will be giving tips and instructions for laying the groundwork of your painting, as well as how to build on it from that point, including finishing touches that make it come alive. This expressive, impressionistic style of painting is loose and free. A joyful process with meditative qualities.
You will be painting in oils on small canvases. Please do not wear anything you can't get paint on. Bring an apron, if you like. You are welcome to continue painting after class is over if you aren't finished. Your masterpiece doesn't have to be completed in the 2 hour class, however there is a good chance you will be!
Looking forward to celebrating art and nature with you!
